“Yellowjackets” – Season 3 Episode 10 review

By Sarah Gavlak

The Season 3 finale of “Yellowjackets” has come. Episode 10 of “Yellowjackets,” titled “Full Circle” answered many questions yet left viewers with so many more.

Despite some of the later episodes lacking in season three, the finale wrapped everything up beautifully.

This post contains spoilers for all three seasons of “Yellowjackets.”

The episode began with a brief time jump in the wilderness, where the girls are routinely bed-checking Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) as the scene flashes back to her finding Misty (Samantha Hanratty) with the black box.

Lottie (Courtney Eaton) is dreaming about the “Antler Queen” when viewers finally get some clarity on her adult death.

Adult Lottie (Simone Kessell) awakens in the morgue with her younger self watching over her, as they both revisit the vision she had when she was baptized in the wilderness.

Unlike the other adult deaths, Lottie had not yet gotten a scene where her younger self and adult counterpart come together in a final dream. It was nice to finally have that clarity, as the show hadn’t given viewers any other information about Lottie’s death until this episode.

Taissa (Tawny Cypress) and Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) take Van’s (Lauren Ambrose) body to bury in the woods. In casual “Yellowjackets” fashion, Tai guts Van and takes a bite out of her heart.

Viewers finally see what Misty (Christina Ricci) had seen on Walter’s (Elijah Wood) phone in episode nine when she confronts Callie (Sarah Desjordins) at school and accuses her of killing Lottie.

Callie immediately folds, giving us our answer and wrapping up Lottie’s storyline.

Shauna eventually comes home to find that Callie and Jeff (Warren Kole) had left her and the house with no warning.

Back in the woods, Akilah (Nia Sondaya) finds that their animals have died, which causes Lottie to spiral and suggest another hunt to appease the wilderness and “It”.

Van (Liv Hewson) and Tai (Jasmin Savoy Brown) contemplate rigging the cards so that the person who draws the queen of hearts isn’t one of their own, putting Hannah’s life at risk.

At this point in the episode, the “Hannah is pit girl” theories are ringing true.

The girls wake up to snow-covered grounds as they gather to draw cards. Shauna (Sophie Néllise) notices Van shuffling the cards in a strange way as she glances at Tai. In the middle of the drawing, she moves to stand in a different spot.

At this point, viewers can see that Shauna has just ruined the plan to make Hannah the next target.

Unfortunately to us, Mari (Alexa Barajas) was the unlucky one to be standing between Shauna and Hannah, drawing the queen.

Mari’s hair being in an updo and her outfit being bright and modest leaves room for hopefulness, as the audience knows “pit girl” was not dressed that way in the Pilot.

All hope is lost, however, when Mari strips down to the infamous gray dress and takes off her shoes.

This is it, this is “pit girl,” and viewers just have to sit back and watch in devastation.

The hunting montage cuts between the different groups of girls. Natalie goes off on her own to uncover the hikers’ phone while Hannah watches her, Gen (Mya Lowe) tries to get Taissa away from Shauna and Akilah returns to the caves to find Lottie.

At this point, Mari cuts her foot as the pieces of the Pilot episode fall together. She continues to run through the woods and fans finally see the scene that they have been trying to figure out since the show’s first episode.

Shauna chillingly tells Natalie to “Prepare her for tonight, and when it’s done, bring me her hair.”

Adult Shauna is alone in her house as she finally finds Melissa’s (Hilary Swank) note. The scene was a beautiful way to show Shauna’s realization that everything she thought was someone “out to get her” was, in fact, not.

She seemingly comes to terms with her problems at this moment and begins writing. Her words make the claim that they “were having so much fun” in the wilderness, which is why their memories have become foggy.

Speak for yourself, Shauna.

The final words are “I was a f–ing queen” as the “Antler Queen” of the teen girls is finally revealed to be her, the original protagonist who was doomed to become the true villain after all.

The girls have their feast, but Akilah and Hannah are missing. Later, Shauna goes to confront Natalie when it’s seen that the real person missing has been her all along after she and Hannah switched clothes.

Misty’s iconic smirk from the Pilot episode is exhibited to be a smirk of hope, rather than a smirk of evilness, which was a very appreciated detail.

“Livin’ on the Edge” by Aerosmith plays as a wide shot of Natalie on top of the mountain is shown as she uses the hikers’ phone to call for help.

Despite a couple of unfavorable plot moments in season three of “Yellowjackets,” the acting has been nothing short of incredible. In this finale especially, these actresses deserve every award there is.

It is not yet confirmed that “Yellowjackets” has been renewed for a fourth season by Showtime, and with two-year gaps between seasons one, two and three, fans can’t expect to see the Yellowjackets again anytime soon.

With this episode ending the way it did, one can only assume that this is the end of their time in the wilderness.

Or is it?
