Women's Lacrosse Game of the Week

By Logan Quinn

The women’s college lacrosse season is underway in the Ivy League as we focus our attention on this week’s game of the week.

The No. 16 Penn Quakers will host the No. 8 Yale Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field.

The Bulldogs anticipate the matchup with a solid record under their belts of 9-3. With a two-game win streak derived from victories against No. 6 Syracuse and Dartmouth this past week, the Bulldogs are looking to expand their successes.

On the other side of the ball, the Penn Quakers come into the matchup with a 6-4 record and a loss just last week to No. 24 Harvard

Despite the loss, the Quakers still have momentum from their victory against No. 6 Maryland with a last-minute goal from Keeley Block.

This matchup will be a battle of the Ivy Leagues, as each team looks to advance its conference record.

Penn will have to strategically face Yale’s defensive unit, which delivered one of its best performances of the year in the game this past weekend against Dartmouth.

The unit held Dartmouth to just six goals. Only one other team, No. 1 Boston College, has held Dartmouth to fewer goals in a single game this season.

The Bulldogs have cultivated a complete unit spanning across the field, though. Contributing to the team’s success is senior midfielder Taylor Lane, who was named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.

In the matchup against Syracuse last Wednesday, Lane earned five points, which tied for the team’s leading point scorer and was second on the team with her seven draw controls.

In this past weekend’s victory against Dartmouth, the midfielder earned six points, raising her season total to 37 points thus far.

Senior attacker Keeley Block will challenge Yale’s defensive unit, though, as she is coming off a game-winning goal in her team’s upset to Maryland, 13-12. Block has 34 points in the season so far and is looking to add to her totals.

The two faced each other just last year in a fiery matchup. The battle went into overtime with Yale clinching the last-minute victory, 10-9, earning them the Ivy League Tournament Championship.

In the previous year’s Ivy League Tournament Championship matchup, we saw an opposite outcome: Penn defeated Yale in yet another overtime battle.

There is no doubt that both teams will bring talent, energy and a desire for revenge to the turf. With dominant play from both sides coming into this matchup, it will be something you will not want to miss.
