"Leaving Toronto" - Mustafa (Feat. Daniel Caesar)

Mustafa recently announced that he will be going on his first-ever tour. When I saw this news, it reminded me of the album that he released earlier this year. Upon revisiting it, I very quickly remembered how amazing the song “Leaving Toronto” is.

In this song, Mustafa opens up about feelings of sadness and loss relating to his hometown, Toronto. This song really just feels emotional. His vocals are so pure throughout the track.

Last week I wrote about a Daniel Caesar song, and he just so happens to be featured on this song. Daniel’s contribution to this song comes in the form of heavenly background vocals that add so much. I guess I can’t escape listening to him, but I am absolutely not upset about it.

In the same post where Mustafa announced his tour, he included a live snippet of the track. It is breathtaking and sounds just as incredible as the original recording.

Towards the latter half of this song, things strip back a little more. It manages to become even more raw sounding. Lyrics that really stick out to me are “And if they ever kill me / Make sure they bury me next to my brother / Make sure my killer has money for a lawyer.”

This song is beautiful and I would recommend giving it a listen if you have never heard of Mustafa. - Noah Vickery
