Weekly Playlist: Dec. 5

Here, members of the Arts and Entertainment Department will talk about the songs that dominated their playlists during the week and what makes them so good.

“Northern Attitude” - Noah Kahan
It is only logical to write about the song Spotify Wrapped claimed was my number two listened to. Unsurprisingly, I was in the top 0.05% of “Northern Attitude” listeners. This year was the season of Noah Kahan, and my Spotify Wrapped proved it. “Northern Attitude” placed number one, and “Stick Season” was a solid number two. Noah Kahan was also my second most listened-to artist.
Since I first heard his “Stick Season” song during my senior year of high school, I have fallen in love with his beautiful, mumbled folk songs. In fact, my entire household — including my grandma — have become avid Noah Kahan fans.
My household is such avid fans that my sister, mom, and I were even able to see him perform his “We’ll All Be Here Forever Tour” live at Madison Square Garden. It was such a wonderful experience. I loved jamming out with my family, and especially seeing the excitement on my mom’s face when she realized one of her favorite artists, James Bay — singer of “Hold Back the River” — was Kahan’s opener.
I love the odd burst of realism that Kahan’s songs emphasize. With finals week and snow in the forecast, I know I’ll be listening to “Northern Attitude” nonstop. - Sarah Taylor

"Neu Roses (Transgressor's Song)" - Daniel Caesar
The beginning of this song is what instantly gets me. The harmonies are absolutely heavenly. It genuinely feels like I start floating every time I hear the start of this song.
There is a beat switch about halfway through the song, and that part also sounds amazing, but I often find myself replaying the first part of the song over and over again. That’s how good it is.
The title of the song is a wordplay of “neurosis” and “new roses.” “Neurosis” fits with the theme of the album, and the title of the album is “Freudian.”
The song reflects on letting go of a lover but ending up wanting them back. The song acts as a plea. It is overall vulnerable and emotional.
I have been on a big Daniel Caesar kick in general lately, and this song has been a big reason why. The vocals are mixed so perfectly. It sounds like candy for your ears. - Noah Vickery
