“Cherry-Coloured Funk” - Cocteau Twins

Released as a single in 1990, “Cherry-Coloured Funk” by the Cocteau Twins is a transcendent exploration of sound and emotion. The song comes from their album “Heaven or Las Vegas,” which is known for the band’s signature dream-pop style.

Their lyrics are ambiguous and obscured by the ethereal sound, almost sounding reversed, moving away from traditional storytelling. However, the hauntingly beautiful vocals weave in and out of the music, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.

The instrumentation and production are what make the track mesmerizing, with lush, layered guitars and reverbs that create a unique soundscape that resonates on a profound level.

There are clear ‘80s influences that come together to make a timeless aesthetic, with shimmering synths that make you want to slow dance and groove to the beat.

“Cherry-Coloured Funk” evokes a multitude of emotions, from nostalgia to longing for love, leaving a lasting impression that resonates deeply with its listeners. - Allison Curley

“Sunday Best” - Surfaces

Even though the weather can’t decide if it wants to be winter or spring, I’ve decided that, barring a freak snowstorm, I will be playing songs that make it feel like spring and summer.

What better spring-sounding song than “Sunday Best” by Surfaces? Even though the coronavirus caused destruction and chaos everywhere, the songs we listened to in 2020 were impeccable.

Just like spring is a ramp-up to summer, the first seventeen or so seconds before the first verse starts enhance what comes next.

The melody evokes the feeling of being outside on a cloudless day with a slight breeze. The piano play does not overpower the lyrics or other elements of the song, making it sound balanced.

The lyrics tell a tale of taking walks in the neighborhood on a sunny Sunday, and even if things aren’t going your way, Surfaces tells you to roll with the punches and leave the day better than you found it.

Between the upbeat lyrics, joyful melody and lilting rhythm, Sunday Best perfectly encapsulates what an ideal spring season should sound like.

While we wait for the weather to be nice consistently, playing Sunday Best by Surfaces can make it feel that way. - Jack Harrison

“Meet Me Halfway” - Black Eyed Peas

For me, this song just has a way of never getting old.

With the weather starting to warm up recently, this is a song I always pull out for the start of summer. The catchy and upbeat rhythm makes me want to roll down my car windows and take a ride to the beach.

While it was released back in 2009, I don’t foresee myself stopping listening to it anytime soon. This is a song I simply don’t believe it is possible to get sick of.

The song has a great, happy and not-so-serious energy that makes it a perfect pick to blast in the summertime, or in my opinion, at any time.

So if you were looking for a good song to listen to while walking around in the warm weather this week, “Meet Me Halfway” is always a great spring and summer staple song that is sure to make you want to dance. - Lucy Bielecki
