CommRadio Weekly Playlist: Feb. 19
Here, members of the Arts and Entertainment Department will talk about the songs that dominated their playlists during the week and what makes them so good.
“Photo ID” - Remi Wolf & Dominic Fike
A few weeks ago my boyfriend and I went to see Anyone But You. Ever since, “Photo ID” has been stuck in our heads. Sometimes we’ll simply be sitting on FaceTime and one of us will start singing it.
“Photo ID” is catchy and definitely a feel-good song. Its namesake lyric, “Lit in line, smile for the photo ID” is so pulchritudinous..? I’m not even sure how to describe it.
To further my bizarre love of this song, I am very much a lyrics person. I don’t entirely understand these lyrics, yet it doesn’t seem to phase me when listening.
Remi’s and Dominic’s voices are absolutely perfect for this track. They complement each other flawlessly; like peanut butter and jelly.
The actual production is also brilliant. The instruments intermixed with the electronic backbeat - magic. It’s so easy to put it on replay.
If you need some more indie pop in your life, I highly recommend “Photo ID.” Go give it a listen. -Isabel Sweet
“get him back” - Olivia Rodrigo
I am a massive fan of Olivia Rodrigo and have been since she dropped one of the most successful debut singles of all time with “driver's license.”
However, it is my boyfriend, who I recently turned into a fan of the newly 21-year-old pop star, who has gotten Rodrigo’s third single off of “GUTS” stuck in my head all week.
“get him back” is one of those pop songs I feel the monoculture has been missing. The catchiness of a “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and the attitude of a “So What.”
I called this track overrated when “GUTS” first hit streaming, and I still don’t believe it is the best song on Rodrigo's sophomore album. However, I think Rodrigo thrives in a pop-punk space with clever lyrics just as, if not stronger than in the heartbreaking ballads.
Rodrigo’s spunky delivery on this track is what takes it from fun to a true banger, and if that’s not the makings of the next pop-princess, what is? -Sophia D’Ovidio
