VMAs Fashion Review

Selena Gomez at the VMAs

MTV's Video Music Awards are infamously where musical artists of all genres dress unconventionally and avant garde for the red carpet and ceremony. A great night for any inspired photographer, the VMAs push limits, shock fans and add colorful b-roll footage.

Selena Gomez in Oscar de la Renta

Oscar de la Renta is famously one of most honored fashion designers and is a fan favorite name at every popular award show. With him, Selena Gomez showcased what the VMAs are truly all about.

After coming back from a long break from releasing albums or singles, she released her newest single, “Single Soon.” Gomez, a former musical leader in the industry with 39 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, welcomed back the spotlight wearing a bombshell dress. Her red dress with texture is elegant, iconic and perfect.

Madelyn Cline at the VMAs

Madelyn Cline in Custom Givenchy

Madelyn Cline, an actor guest, dressed for the occasion in a layered, multi textured, dewey makeup and nude look.

Even considering all the different aspects of the gown, there wasn’t any sort of sense of overwhelm. She radiates goldness in a shiny, satin seeming fabric. Cline looked airy, graceful and like a goddess, all while looking natural.

Matthew M. Williams, the current Givenchy director, definitely has quintessential innovation with each of his muses. Cline’s look was obviously curated for her and matched every feature and element of her natural beauty.

Nicki Minaj at the VMAs

Nicki Minaj in Dolce & Gabbana

The “Queen of Rap” Nicki Minaj dressed in a head-to-toe pink, seductive bridal gown turned heads. Minaj, a very esteemed musical artist with eight VMAs, discernibly has authority over her PR team because of how iconic her red carpet costume was.

Minaj pulled aspects together from her newest releases featured on the new movie that sold over one billion, “Barbie.” The best example of Minaj’s stardom efforts is the “Barbie” movie’s ending credits song, “Barbie World,” with Ice Spice.

She is an apologetic woman in the public eye, which is signified well in a veil, corset and lace. Her over-the-top sparkly pink eye shadow and dramatically long silver, studded and pink fingernails brought the best of the best to the red carpet.

Coco Jones at the VMAs

Coco Jones in Moschino

Moschino has an inconsistent element of whether the red carpet designs will exude tackiness or elegance. Coco Jones in a skimpy black leather two-piece with silver hardware and chunky black jewelry sent mixed signals.

However, Jones’ hair and makeup looked timeless and effortless. The creativity and alternative elements kept the look interesting; without the bulky necklace, bracelet and earrings, Jones would have committed to the ‘brawn girl’ look.

The simplicity about the accent color being dull under the black leather or her thinly strapped heels really brought the viewer’s attention to her skirt and top, which were surprising and show-stopping.
