Three Penn State fraternities combine to create new interfraternity council
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Three fraternities at Penn State formed a new independent interfraternity council. Tau Kappa Epsilon, Sigma Chi, and Pi Kappa Alpha have all parted ways with Penn State’s interfraternity council, making them now unaffiliated with the school.
The new council is named the State College Interfraternity Council, or SCIFC, and is fully unaffiliated with Penn State. However, the SCIFC has stated that it would like to work in tandem with the university in the future. The council is also open to working with other fraternities that would like to disassociate with Penn State.
The three fraternities that make up SCIFC were already disenfranchised with Penn State, with Tau Kappa Epsilon going independent in Fall 2024, and Sigma Chi and Pi Kappa Alpha currently under suspension.
Former Sigma Chi President Sam Lanza said, “The bottom line is that we want our chapter to be free from the compliance environment that has existed since the Piazza agreement went into place.”
Timothy Piazza was a sophomore who was found dead after a hazing incident at an on-campus fraternity house in 2017. Since then, the university has created rules and regulations to minimize hazing from Greek life.
