THON community kicks off the Dream Forward campaign
The THON community has officially kicked off its sixth annual Dream Forward Campaign, one of their largest fundraising and awareness efforts aimed at supporting Four Diamonds, and for children battling cancer at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital.
The campaign began with the THON 5K powered by PNC which will bleed into the 100 Days 'Til THON celebration, with a goal of raising a million dollars.
Last year, the Dream Forward Campaign raised an impressive $1,601,849.07, highlighting the community’s commitment to fighting childhood cancer.
This year, participants are encouraged to reflect on the theme “Why do you dream?” as they embark on the journey towards a future free of childhood cancer. Turning this dream into a reality.
An example of those facing struggles is the story of Jonus Wetzel, a 5-year-old who was diagnosed with High-Risk B-cell acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on January 9, 2022. Jonus spent 148 days as an inpatient from January to May, showing his never-ending fight. However, following what was expected to be his final spinal tap on June 19, 2024, doctors discovered that his cancer had returned. Jonus is now receiving treatment in Philadelphia, with emotional and financial support from Four Diamonds and Penn State THON.
He dreams of growing up to be a detective and a dad, expressing a desire to help people in need, inspired by the love he feels for his own father.
“My vision for our lives post-cancer is bright,” said Jonus’ mother, Tara. “I imagine a life where we watch our kids grow, play, learn, and thrive. I hope that one day this will be a reality for Jonus.” that is what Penn State THON’s for.
Throughout the campaign, the THON community will unite to Dream Forward, fostering hope that children like Jonus will one day achieve their dreams.
