Logan Stankoven celebrating

The race for the 2025 Calder Trophy

By Andrew Matz

Just over a month into the NHL season, we have seen plenty of rookies who have made impacts on their teams.

Some of these players have been unexpected, while others have played how people thought or even better.

As we continue on the year-long Calder race, it will continue to heat up. Here’s a look at some of the Players who are currently in the running for the trophy in no particular order.

Matvei Michkov, (RW), Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers have had luck on their side when it comes to Matvei Michkov. Not only did they steal him at the 2023 draft, but they got him with the No.7 pick. They were able to get him to come over after only one year when he was supposed to be in Russia for three.

Although, John Tortorella decided to healthy-scratch Michkov in Thursday night's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Michkov has done wonders for the Flyers.

Through 13 games this season, Michkov has 10 points(4 G, 6A). He is second on the team in points.

Logan Stankoven, (C), Dallas Stars

Last year Logan Stankoven played in 24 games for the Dallas Stars. He tallied 14 points (6 G, 8 A) in those 24 games.

Since he did not play in 25 games last year Stankoven did not lose his rookie eligibility.

Stankoven has been a major help for this Stars team. In 12 games this season Stankoven has 12 points (2 G, 10 A). He has already almost reached his point totals from last year in half the games.

Macklin Celebrini, (C), San Jose Sharks

The No.1 overall pick in last year’s draft had an unfortunate start to his season. After scoring in his first game, he would also suffer an injury in that game.

This held him out for a little under a month and he would make his return on Nov. 5, against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In that game, he didn’t do much, but he would step back onto the scene in the following game.

In Thursday night’s game, he would score two goals against the Minnesota Wild.

So far this season, Celebrini has four points (3 G, 1 A) in the three games he has played.

Dustin Wolf, (G), Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames were a team that many thought would not be good this year. This has not been true so far as through 14 games the Flames find themselves in a wildcard spot in the Western Conference.

Dustin Wolf has been one of the pieces that has helped this team. His stats might not look the best but he has been good. He has posted a .906 save percentage and 3.10 goals against average.

He has helped the Flames win games so far, as he has won four of the seven games he has played in.

It’s still early in the season and we can see many others jump into the race.

Some players to watch out for are Will Smith, Cutter Gauthier, Lane Hutson and Mavrik Bourque.
