The Golden Globes Fashion Review
Live from Beverly Hills, California, the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place on Jan. 7, 2024. The night celebrated the best films and American television productions in 2023.
Along with highly anticipated announcers, winners, and acceptance speeches, each celebrity showed, what should be, their best red carpet looks at the first award show of 2024.
Best Dressed:
Kristen Wiig in Giambattista Valli
Kristen Wiig, the obvious best comedian at the event, was dressed head to toe in Giambattista Valli. The Italian fashion designer dressed Wiig in a two-piece bralette with a slimming long skirt.
Her look was a total compilation of everything popular in 2023. The textured fabric, monochromatic look, slick-back hairstyle, accessorized with bows, minimal jewelry and natural-looking makeup, flawlessly showed all trendy styles in 2023.
Her confidence in this look radiated through the screen to everyone’s home.
Timothee Chalamet in Celine Homme by Hedi Slimane
Timothee Chalamet, nominated for Actor in a Musical or Comedy Film for “Wonka,” was dressed in Celine Homme by Hedi Slimane.
Chalamet, as usual, is one of the best-dressed men on the carpet. For each red carpet event, it is apparent that Chalamet and whoever works for him understands what flatters him.
Typically in dark jewel tones, he showed up to the Golden Globes in a black suit with a dazzling black sequin suit jacket. Everything about this look was impeccable, including his Cartier Collection necklace with diamonds and 18k gold.
Hailee Steinfeld in Prada
In a custom pink Prada dress, Hailee Steinfeld seemingly dressed as an ode to old Hollywood with a fitted, non-revealing satin dress, gloves, diamonds and an Audrey Hepburn hair-do.
Steinfeld wore a timeless, beautiful look. However simple, the detailing is impressive. The pleating, stitching, and special revealing back balanced the look to perfection.
Worst Dressed:
Dua Lipa in Schiaparelli
Possibly the most disappointing look during the Golden Globes was Dua Lipa’s. Dressed in Schiaparelli totally missed the mark. The Italian designer is best known for their avante-garde designs, although since 2007 Schiaparelli moved to ready-to-wear luxury.
However, nothing about Dua Lipa’s look was luxurious or ready-to-wear. She was nominated for the Original Song with her hit song, “Dance the Night” featured in the “Barbie” movie. Understandably, wearing a mermaid dress to pay a thank you for her role as Mermaid Barbie. However, it wasn’t good-looking.
The skeleton sequins on black velvet were cut off abruptly by a black mermaid tail train. Dua Lipa had the honor of wearing a 1962 necklace from Tiffany & Co.’s vault to further glamorize the look.
Overall, the red carpet design isn’t cohesive. Each element is pretty on its own, but together it looks like a hot mess.
Jennifer Aniston in Dolce & Gabbana
Boring. Yawning. Sloppy.
There was nothing special about Jennifer Aniston’s strapless gown designed by Dolce & Gabbana. Usually, Dolce & Gabbana dresses stars in a patterned, bold and voluminous gown. Maybe they wanted to do something different for Aniston but did not succeed.
Aniston should have been dressed in a cap sleeve gown with a slit on the leg in navy to compliment her olive skin tone. Instead, her shapeless, strapless gown made her look like a curtain and aged her.
The epitome of a timeless face and name, Aniston was washed out, looked tired and didn’t show up wearing anything exciting.
Elizabeth Banks in Dolce & Gabbana
Dolce & Gabbana, again. The same look in different fonts didn’t work the second time. Elizabeth Banks is usually a fresh-faced woman with a seemingly gold aura surrounding her presence. But not during the Golden Globes.
The red carpet look lacked balance. The strapless gown with slicked back hair with no necklace seems incomplete. However detailed with studs on the corset, it looked ill fitting on Banks.
The overall look resembled a step up from a dance costume. Also, doesn’t Dolce & Gabbana know to not mix rhinestones and pearls? Banks looked ghostly on the red carpet due to the lack of flattering makeup.
