Tessa Janecke named captain for Penn State women's hockey.

Last week, the Penn State women's hockey team named Tessa Janecke as the captain for this year. Janecke will attempt to fill the void of Julie Gough who was last year's captain.

Janecke, who is entering her third season, has done so much for the program ever since she stepped foot on the ice. She will be the 12th captain in program history.

Last season, Janecke was one of the team's alternate captains and helped lead the team to another CHA championship.

In her two years on the team, Janecke has led the team to two CHA championships and two NCAA tournament appearances.

Janecke had a stellar freshman season scoring 22 goals and putting up 25 assists. That season, she also won a gold medal with the US Women's Hockey team.

In her sophomore year, she was named one of the top 10 finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award for the top player in Division I women’s ice hockey.

Janecke finished the regular season as the CHA scoring champion with 17 goals and 36 assists.

With those 17 goals, she became the fastest player in program history to hit 100 career points.

Janecke always puts the team first and it is very evident when speaking to her in postgame press conferences. When asked about becoming the fastest player in program history to hit 100 career points, Janecke gave almost all the credit to her teammates.

“Obviously it’s a milestone for me,” Janecke said. “But it’s not like something I can do alone. So it’s awesome to have this group to celebrate with.”

Janecke will be the team's captain alongside three alternate captains. Mya Vaslet, Brianna Brooks and Lyndie Lobdell.

Janecke will make her debut as a captain on Sept. 26 against Northwestern at home.
