Singles Round Up: Feb. 12

Singles Round Up – The Arts and Entertainment Department takes a look at some of the recently released singles from the past week.

“Too Much” - girl in red
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, indie icon girl in red is back with an independent anthem single, “Too Much.”
As one can assume from its title, “Too Much” follows the narrative of a girl being told she’s too much of herself throughout a relationship.
Heart-stinging lyrics like, “Don’t you just love to kill the light in my eyes, to make me low when I’m high,” riddle the song to encapsulate the feeling of constantly being ridiculed for being genuine.
The muted vocals of girl in red are paralleled with the simplistic instrumentals she employs, which work to elevate her message in a relatable manner. Her lack of frills makes it seem more like a diary entry or spoken poetry than a produced song.
“Too Much” is definitely going to be a favorite for those in their bag on Wednesday and girl in red fans alike as it provides a point of view for those in a similar situation without straying from her usual discography. -Megan Kelby

“Don’t Forget Me” - Maggie Rogers
Maggie Rogers dropped her new single “Don’t Forget Me” which will start the rollout of her third album with the same title.
This new era of Rogers sounds like a blend of everything she’s done so far and makes perfect sense as the next step in her career.
She sings about wanting new challenges and experiences in life but still doesn’t want anyone to forget who she is.
“So close the door and change the channel / Give me something I can handle.” Rogers expresses her willingness to start something new but with undertones that she is still nervous in this journey.
This complements how the sound of the track feels, it’s very quintessential and old-school Maggie, which is always a treat to hear.
Her vocals are very raw and almost have a hint of country twang in the folk-rock track.
This song makes you want to drive along the coast and feel the wind in your hair, and if the new album follows this pattern it will for sure be a hit. -Madison Rush

“Boston” - Owl City
Adam Young, aka Owl City, gained fame through uploading videos to MySpace in the late 2000s. From there he signed onto Universal Republic and the rest is history.
Owl City has written some pretty nostalgic songs, but he hasn’t made any waves since “When Can I See You Again?” which was featured in "Wreck-It Ralph" in 2012. However, he did just release a new single, “Boston.”
This song was definitely what you would expect Owl City to write. It has a funky production backbeat that’s so much fun to listen to. Plus, he just has a nice voice.
While all of “Boston” was convivial, the first two-thirds of the song was a little slow to start. The bridge was hands-down the best part!
Favorite line? “I think I'll get a lover and fly him out to Spain.” It was just so random and perfect. The whole track is!
The song isn’t much, but it was definitely worth the listen. Go check it out. -Isabel Sweet
