Should Americans expect TikTok to “Go Dark” this Saturday?

Not to fear—your “For You Page” is safe (for at least another 75 days). This past Friday, President Donald Trump announced via social media that he was signing a second executive order extending the deadline for TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell its U.S. assets by another 75 days.

President Trump stated that his administration has been taking every possible measure to formulate a deal that will “save” TikTok. He added that the administration “has made tremendous progress” in moving toward finalizing a sale.

Vice President J.D. Vance had previously stated that a deal would be complete by April 5, a prediction that has since proven incorrect. Although the deal was not finalized within the original timeline set by the administration, President Trump shared that there is “tremendous interest” in the sale and “a lot of potential buyers.”

However, no official details regarding the finalization of the sale have been released, aside from a few vaguely optimistic remarks on social media. The President did say that “the deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed.”

Trump signed an executive order on Friday, April 4, ratifying the delay, just one day before the original date the ban was to take effect. Although there have been no official updates from the Trump administration regarding the sale’s progress, President Trump did state on social media, “We hope to continue working in good faith with China.” He also added, “We do not want TikTok to go dark.”

For now, these few social media updates are the only news that an estimated 135 million American TikTok users have to base the future of their "FYP" on.
