Team USA

Presidents Cup reaction

By Andrew Deal

Over the past 30 years, the Presidents Cup has taken place a total of 15 times. In those 15 matchups, the United States won 13 times and tied once. The International squad looked to get the second victory that they have been searching for, for quite some time.

However, that did not go to plan for the International squad and it was a clear advantage from the start for the Americans.

Just looking at the names themselves, the United States should have been victorious and they did just that, coming out with an 18.5 to 11.5 victory.

For the United States, it’s headlined by world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler was joined by Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark and Patrick Cantlay, as well as others.

With those names, the Americans should have dominated, considering there are three of the top four golfers in the world right now just on the American side.

It was a back-and-forth battle through the first two days of play. In the Thursday Four-ball, the United States won every single matchup to get out to a hot start.

However, the International team regrouped and dominated the Friday Foursomes round the next day to set up for what could be a historic weekend.

Two sets of matches took place on Saturday and the United States jumped out in front to set the team up for a victory on Sunday.

After losing every match in the foursomes round on Friday, the Americans bounced back on Saturday in the foursomes match, taking three out of the four matches.

With the United States in the lead heading into the Sunday singles round, the team set its players up for what they do best, golfing solo.

Despite being the world No. 1 heading into the weekend, Scheffler did not win his match against Hideki Matsuyama. Matsuyama pulled ahead at the start of the back nine and ended up winning by a stroke.

It was the No. 2 and No. 4 golfers in the world that stepped up to take down their International counterparts.

Schauffele and Morikowa dominantly won their matches against top golfers Jason Day and Adam Scott.

It was ultimately Keegan Bradley who clinched the victory for the United States. A close missed putt by Si Woo Kim gave Bradley the victory and clinched the win for the United States in the 2024 Presidents Cup.

The United States would go on to take the win 18.5 to 11.5 and run away with the victory.

It’s the largest margin of victory since 2017, four Presidents Cups ago, where the Americans defeated the International squad 19-11.

The United States continued its winning streak, now not having lost since 2003 when the team tied the International team 17-17.
