President Biden withdraws from presidential race, endorses VP Harris
President Joe Biden has decided to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, after much pressure from within his party to do so.
Biden stated that he would focus on completing his term instead of seeking reelection.
"I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden said in his statement.
This decision comes after a challenging debate performance that alarmed many Democrats and led to increased speculation about his ability to compete against former President Donald Trump.
Biden’s exit leaves the Democratic Party in an unprecedented position with only a few months until the Nov. 5 election.
Biden went on to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for the party’s nomination. Harris previously served as Attorney General and Senator for California.
Reaction to this announcement came fast with Republican nominee/former President Donald Trump slamming Biden on his social media site TruthSocial, saying Biden “was not fit to run for President.”
The Democratic Party will now have to nominate another candidate formally at the Democratic National Convention, running from August 19-22. Democrats had previously planned to formally nominate Biden and Harris during a virtual roll call in early August to meet a ballot deadline in Ohio.
This is a breaking story that is still developing. Stay tuned to CommRadio News for more details.
