Penn State's WORDS organization puts on Halloween "Spooky Slam"

The art of poetry and the spirit of Halloween came together in celebration of a "Spooky Slam" this Friday, Oct. 20. Hosted by Penn State’s Writers Organize to Represent Diverse Stories (WORDS), the event beheld beautiful sequences of stories through the power and rawness of poetry.
WORDS is an organization at Penn State working to create authentic conversation within the outlet of literature. Their event, "Spooky Slam," was an opportunity for members to vocalize their new workings in front of an audience.
Walking into Forum 105, it was apparent that this was a group of creativity from the vibrant Halloween decor to the spirited costumes, it was a fun-loving atmosphere. With three rounds of judging, each slammer spoke before the top three winners were announced.
There was an array of writings from personal stories to reflections on societal standards that supplied a means of expression. WORDS provides a platform for students to feel like they have the authority to speak their minds and be unapologetically themselves as well as vocalize their opinions on the matters of the world.
James Genovese, a first-year undecided major, was one of the slammers at the event. They have utilized writing to “process things...especially difficult things” and WORDS has provided a space where they can “hear such from others as well.” The community aspect was present as each member embraced every presenter with open arms and after each performance, the room was filled with the support of snaps.
WORDS is an impactful piece of Penn State as it is a resource where students can go to feel the freedom and love to share their thoughts and their authentic lives and be themselves without judgment.
Another slammer, Kayli Higginbotham, a senior majoring in economics, finds that “having a safe environment to express emotions and our personal experiences...in the sense that we are here to enjoy” is something so powerful.
There is an evident sense of passion for poetry, the group is always open to vocalizing constructive criticism with the aim to allow their members to grow and expand as writers and their own selves.
As a collective, it was a wonderful time to escape into the beauty of poetry and appreciate the monumental influence of writing. WORDS meets every Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in Osmond 201, for more visual information be sure to check out their Instagram @wordspennstate.
