Penn State’s Panhellenic Council puts on Greek Sing

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Twelve teams of different sororities and fraternities competed at Greek Sing to win a THON performance, raise money for their philanthropy and excite the crowd with fun music and silly costumes, all hosted by Penn State’s Panhellenic Council.
Greek Sing, which was held in Schwab Auditorium on Nov. 2, is the event where the Gayle Beyer’s Scholarship is given to deserving women who show excellence in the eyes of the Penn State Panhellenic Council. On Thursday night, the auditorium filled 400 seats with students who came to support the 32 sororities and fraternities at Penn State.
Catarina Schiff, who serves as the vice president for programming on the Panhellenic Council, began her planning for Greek Sing in March 2023.
She explained that Greek Sing has a special and high incentive: one team earns a performance at THON Weekend 2024 during Greek Hour.
These performances showed off each team’s hard work through exciting music, fun themes and crowd-thrilling dance moves. Everything was self-run. After getting the chapters randomly paired together, they had one month to choose music, choreograph, decide on a costume and practice.
Some of the chosen themes included the “Barbie'' movie, a Rihanna mash-up, a Super Bowl half-time performance, country music, “Grease” and Bruno Mars' "24K Magic."
One team made a mash-up of their Four Diamonds families’ favorite songs and put on a dance full of Taylor Swift, Harry Styles and “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen.
After each performance, the judges gave their thoughts and, at times, instigated the crowd for a response.
While the judges discussed their chosen winner, the Gayle Beyer’s Scholarship of $4,000 was awarded to four women in the Panhellenic community across different chapters.
After all the excitement for the recipients dispersed the winner of the contest was announced: Alpha Xi Delta and Alpha Sigma took home Greek Sing tee-shirts and the opportunity to perform their Barbie and Ken-themed dance routine during THON Weekend at Greek Hour.
Their performance received a standing ovation after they recreated iconic scenes from the Warner Brothers movie including “Dance The Night” by Dua Lipa and “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling.
