Penn State's Greek Sing event returns
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - This week, the annual Greek Sing event is back at Penn State. The event, organized by the Penn State Panhellenic Council, features both fraternities and sororities that pair together in teams to dance to different music.
Catarina Schiff is the vice president for programming on the Panhellenic Council. She talked about how many participants this year’s event is expecting.
“This year we have over ten teams performing and they have prepared different music mashups as well as different themes,” Schiff said.
This event requires an abundance of preparation beforehand. Performers have to put in the hours to make sure they get the choreography just right before the big day.
“We would meet with our other organizations that we were paired with about once or twice a week.” Savannah Heiden, a member of Sigma Alpha, said. Heiden was one of the dancers in last year’s performance.
Proceeds from this event benefit the Gayle Bayer's Scholarship Fund. According to the Panhellenic Council’s website, this scholarship was founded in 1985 and is given to a Panhellenic woman who demonstrates commitment and excellence to the Penn State Panhellenic Council.
According to Schiff, this was a huge event before the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was previously held in the Eisenhower Auditorium on campus where teams would sing in addition to dance, hence the event’s name. Schiff, however, has big aspirations for the event’s future.
“A hope of mine is whoever follows after me is to continue making it a bigger event and maybe making it back to Eisenhower one day,” Schiff said.
This year’s event will take place this Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Schwab Auditorium.
