Josie Bothun against Yale

Penn State women's hockey star goaltender Josie Bothun out for season

Penn State Nittany Lions all-time wins and shutout leader Josie Bothun will miss the rest of the season due to an undisclosed surgery.

Jeff Kampersal announced Friday afternoon that Bothun will undergo surgery next week which will sideline her for the rest of the season.

Bothun, a senior, was Penn State's first-ever USCHO.com national award winner as rookie of the year in 2020-21. Bothun also holds the Penn State goaltending record for wins (60) and shutouts (19)

Bothun was named CHA goaltender of the week prior to the series last weekend against Syracuse.

The injury seemingly happened in Game 1 against the Orange in the third period when Syracuse forward Darci Johal scored a shorthanded breakaway goal. Bothun went down but skated off on her own. Annie Spring would come in and play the rest of the third period.

Bothun did not return to the bench after leaving the game.

Bothun is a huge loss to this Nittany Lions team trying to get back into the USCHO.com poll.
