UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network. They have over 610 users in more than 200 countries. It has helped many students at Penn State find internships and careers after college.

There are some disadvantages to LinkedIn however, it doesn’t feel as personal as other social media platforms.

Meg Stewart, a third-year studying broadcast journalism, said that social media is great for making connections.

“I am much more comfortable on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram and Facebook because it is something I am familiar with. I think it is still very easy to be professional and also casual whenever we are reaching out to people on these platforms. I think it is a great way to make connections,” Stewart said.

Traditional social media platforms like Facebook, X and Instagram can also be helpful when trying to network. Comment sections and threads can create communities where questions and conversations are welcomed.

On the other hand, LinkedIn and social media platforms can work together to help people get access to more opportunities.

Matt Becker, a first-year studying broadcast journalism said that social media can help you get jobs.

“I think they work hand-in-hand because if somebody is looking at your LinkedIn they’re going to look at your social media after, especially if they are trying to hire you for an internship. So if your social media is good and your LinkedIn is good I think it will help you get a job and I think they work comparably together,” Becker said.

These social media platforms can feel more personal and less scary than LinkedIn. The connections that you make on X, Facebook and Instagram can be just as helpful to gain opportunities.
