Penn State men's hockey announces 2023-2024 captains
The Penn State men’s hockey team officially announced the captains for the 2023-2024 season early Monday morning.
In a teaser video released on X and Instagram, Xander Lamppa and Christian Sarlo were announced as alternate captains while Christian Berger was named captain.
Lamppa, a senior forward from Rochester, Minn., is coming off a career season where he amassed six goals, 13 assists and 19 points, all career highs.
Alongside his offensive boost in production, Lamppa moved from wing to center, where he ranked third on the team in faceoff percentage, winning 54.1 percent of his draws.
Sarlo, a senior forward reigning from Lynbrook, N.Y., also had a career season in 2022-2023, where he tallied 17 points on seven goals and 10 assists.
Sarlo last served as an alternate captain for the Lincoln Stars in the USHL in 2019-2020, where he ranked second on the team with 44 points.
Berger takes over as captain after fifth-year senior and fellow defenseman Paul DeNaples graduated this past season.
The St. Louis, Mo., native skated in all 39 games last season and had a personal best season as well with five goals and 20 points.
Berger’s presence was felt on both ends of the ice, as he led the Nittany Lions with 70 blocked shots.
The senior was also named to the Allentown Regional All-Tournament Team after posting one goal and two assists during last year’s NCAA Tournament.
