Penn State in the NFL: Week 2

By Amanda Vogt

PSU Football vs. Northwestern

Many former Penn State stars shined in the second week of the NFL campaign.

Here’s a recap of what many Penn Staters did in the second weekend of the NFL.

Micah Parsons, LB, Dallas Cowboys

Against the New York Jets in the home opener, Parsons and the Cowboys’ defense limited the green and white. The linebacker continued his strong start to the season with two sacks and four solo tackles.

Parsons has the ability to cover any position on the defensive line and rush through the offensive line with ease. His speed and agility forced heavy pressure upon Jets quarterback Zach Wilson.

At times, he took the center one-on-one and beat right through any offensive lineman. Parsons’ dominance is the anchor of the Cowboys’ defense – he also forced a fumble and limited the offensive attack by New York.

Saquon Barkley, RB, New York Giants

The running back had a bounce-back week on the road against the Cardinals. The Giants were down 20-0 at halftime and rallied to win 31-28.

Barkley rushed for 63 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown, and through the air, he caught six passes for 29 yards for another touchdown.

However, in the final minute of the game, a rush up the middle resulted in his ankle getting stuck right underneath him because of how Krys Barnes tackled him; Barkley was then helped off the field.

On Monday, it was announced that he sprained his ankle and is expected to be sidelined for three weeks.

Joey Porter Jr., CB, Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers’ defense needed a bounce-back game to aid the offense in getting its first win of the season. On the game’s first play, the unit returned Deshaun Watson’s first passing attempt to the house for a pick-six.

Porter got into the action with his first pass breakup of his career. On a third and eight, Watson tried to connect with Elijah Moore, but a slight hesitation to make the throw allowed the rookie to cut back and cut off the pass, preventing the first down.

Chris Godwin, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Along with Chris Evans, Godwin has been a strong target for quarterback Baker Mayfield.

While Godwin has seen fewer targets, his presence should increase as opponents toughen and defenses could potentially double up on Evans.

Against the Bears, the wide receiver made five catches for 58 yards. His longest reception was for 24 yards — his furthest of the early season.
