Opinion: MLB top 5 most disappointing moments so far
The MLB season is still young and there is plenty of time for every team and every player to turn their season around. Despite that, there have been some early red flags across the league, some bigger than others. Here are the top five of the most disappointing moments so far.
No. 5 No ABS Challenge System
In spring training this year, we saw the ABS challenge system being used by major league players. This was giving them the opportunity to challenge balls and strikes by touching their head if they felt the umpire made a bad call.
What seems like a good idea on paper is not quite at the major league level just yet for the regular season.
We have already seen some players tap their head in the regular season, letting the umpires know when they make their mistakes.
It almost seems like the system should have already been implemented if the technology exists and works to prevent key at bats from ending on bad calls.
No. 4 Alec Bohm’s Rocky Start
The Phillies third baseman has had his struggles in the past, with the start of the 2025 season being no different. In 75 at-bats Bohm is hitting .173 with no home runs and only five RBIs.
With talks in the offseason about the team looking to replace Bohm not turning into anything, the move to keep him is starting to seem questionable early this season.
No. 3 Joc Pederson having three hits
The two time All-Star has never been known for having a high batting average, instead being a power threat who could change the tides of a game with one swing.
In 2025 forever, Pederson has simply not shown up in any regard. He has accumulated three hits in his first 50 at-bats, good for a .060 batting average with zero home runs and zero RBIs.
This horrendous start surely has Rangers fans wondering if the Pederson they signed is even the same player who has contributed to winning two World Series trophies in the past.
No. 2 The Atlanta Braves
A team that is filled with so much talent has found themselves in a sticky situation to start the 2025 season. The Braves sit dead last in the NL East division, winning five of their first 18 games.
For a team that has made the playoffs the last seven years, finishing first in the division apart from in 2022, this is quite the alarming start.
No. 1 Dylan Crews having early struggles
The former second overall pick in the 2023 draft has seen his fair share of troubles since playing in the major leagues every day. Crews started his 2025 campaign 0-19 at the plate. He is now hitting .140 in 57 at-bats with no RBIs and four stolen bases.
This is his first time seeing consistent play time at the highest level, so it could just be taking Crews some extra time to adapt to the major league pitching.
The season is far from over and it is still too soon to write off any team or player from having a good season. For the sake of everyone on this list, I hope they are able to turn it around sooner rather than later.
