Olympic Swimming recap: Day 6

Day 6 at the pool brought another round of action-packed finals and set up an exciting and star-studded day of finals for Day 7.

Finals

Women’s 200m Butterfly

  1. Summer McIntosh- Canada

  2. Regan Smith- United States

  3. Zhang Yufei- China

McIntosh continued her strong Olympic performance with her second gold medal and third overall of the week. After a strong start from Zhang, McIntosh asserted herself in the last 75 meters. Smith would also pass Zhang and take the silver, her second of the meet and fourth overall.

Men’s 200m Backstroke

  1. Hubert Kós- Hungary 1:54.26

  2. Apostolos Christou- Greece 1:54.82

  3. Roman Mityukov- Switzerland 1:54.85

Christou, the oldest in the field, was the commanding presence at the start, leading for the first 150 meters of the race. Kós did exactly what he is known for however, and he took control in the last 50 to pass Christou and take the gold medal. Kós’s win was the first gold medal of the Paris Olympics for Hungary across all sports.

Women’s 200m Breaststroke

  1. Kate Douglass- United States 2:19.24

  2. Tatjana Smith- South Africa 2:19.60

  3. Tes Schouten- Netherlands 2:21.05

This race was a showdown between Douglass who was the favorite, and Smith who won the 100m breaststroke and was the reigning champion in this event. Both women were neck and neck for the entire race. Douglass used her strong turns and pulled away at the end to take the gold medal.

Women’s 4x200 Freestyle Relay

  1. Australia 7:38.08 OR

  2. United States 7:40.06

  3. China 7:42.34

Australia was a big favorite in this relay as any other event in the meet, and it was on display. Katie Ledecky brought the United States back into the race with a strong third leg, but they would be no contest in the end for the Australian team of Mollie O’Callaghan, Lani Pallister, Brianna Throssell and Ariarne Titmus. With the silver medal, Ledecky became the most decorated female swimmer of all time with 13 medals.
