
Olympic Swimming recap: Day 5
Day 5 saw some of the biggest stars of the meet back on display and some of the greatest matchups of the meet. Let’s dive in.
Finals
Women's 100m Freestyle
Sarah Sjöström- Sweden 52.16
Torri Huske- United States 52.29
Siobhán Haughey- Hong Kong 52.33
Sjöström, the world record holder in this event, won her first Olympic gold medal in the event just passing Huske, who continued her strong meet to win the silver. A last minute decision for Sjöström paid off as she originally didn’t plan on swimming the event but decided to give it one last shot, and it’s her first victory at either an olympics or world championships.
Men’s 200m Butterfly
Léon Marchand- France 1:51.21 OR
Kristóf Milák- Hungary 1:51.75
Ilya Kharun- Canada 1:52.80
This event brought one of the biggest matchups of the meet with French star Marchand facing the world record holder and reigning gold medalist in Milák. Milák had a strong start and led for the first three lengths. Marchand surged off the last turn overtaking Milák with less than 15 meters to go to win his second gold of the meet.
Women's 1500m Freestyle
Katie Ledecky- United States 15:30.02 OR
Anastasiya Kirpichnikova- France 15:40.35
Isabel Marie Gose- Germany 15:41.16
Ledecky continued her dominance in the event, holding the lead from start to finish. With this swim, Ledecky now holds the top 21 times in history and has 24 of the top 25 times. Kirpichnikova came out on top of a close battle for silver and Gose pulled away from Simona Quadarella of Italy to take the bronze.
Men’s 200m Breaststroke
Léon Marchand- France 2:05.85 OR
Zac Stubblety-Cook- Australia 2:06.79
Caspar Corbeau- Netherlands 2:07.90
Marchand led throughout the race to take home his second gold medal of the night and third of the week as he held off former Olympic record holder Stubblety-Cook. With the win, Marchand became the first swimmer in history to win the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke.
Men’s 100m Freestyle
Pan Zhanle- China 46.40 WR
Kyle Chalmers- Australia 47.48
David Popovici- Romania 47.49
Pan dominated this event and lowered his own world record in the process. He held a strong lead at the turn, and his lead only grew on the second 50. Pan’s win was the widest margin of victory for this event at the Olympics since 1924, which was also in Paris.
