Offset Concert Review

By Jack Freiser

January 19th marked this year's SPA Day- a celebration of the Student Programming Association. The final event of the day was a concert featuring DJ Earworm and rapper Offset, mostly known as a member of Migos. This event took place in Alumni Hall in the HUB.

Doors opened at 8 and people patiently waited for Offset’s arrival. Sadly, we were all forced to listen to a dreadful opening DJ. DJ Earworm did not have a “usual” DJ performance. Instead, he played mashups of songs that had no right to be together.

The most memorably bad mix featured “lonely” by Billie Eilish and “FTCU” by Nicki Minaj. The two songs have nothing in common and the off-tempo mix just sounded messy and honestly unlistenable.

The audience booed when DJ Earworm finished around 9:30. For the next hour students got impatient waiting for Offset’s tardy arrival. In fact, many people began to walk out of Alumni Hall. By 10:30 most people had lost hope as Offset’s DJ continued to play countless songs to try and engage the audience.

Finally, Offset came on stage.

yuh

Offset began his set with “Ghostface Killah” a recognizable track from his collab album with 21 Savage and Metro Boomin, “Without Warning.” The audience went crazy as he entered the stage and instantly mosh pits began to form.

Offset was quite engaging with the Penn State community. He constantly talked to the audience, took selfies with fans, and even took a moment to recognize a student who had bought the hard copy of his latest album.

The beginning of the performance was a bit lackluster since he played five songs off his latest album “Set it Off” which he released in October of last year. However, halfway through his set, attitudes changed when he began playing huge hit songs from Migos.

“Narcos,” “Walk It Talk It,” “T-Shirt,” “Need It” and “Motorsport” played back to back creating a completely different atmosphere. The crowd went wild rapping with Offset on these classic tracks.

Offset finished up by playing memorable features of his from tracks like “Taste,” “Zeze” and “Run It Up,” all of which also made the audience light up. Offset ended his set with arguably his most iconic songs, “Ric Flair Drip” and “Bad and Boujee.”

boom

His performance contained a whole lot of energy as he was jumping across the stage and interacting with the audience at the barricade. Offset definitely left his mark at the HUB as he played a memorable performance for SPA Day.

While it took a bit of time for audiences to adjust to his set, it was well worth the wait as Offset truly popped off.
