NHL Game of the Week: Winnipeg Jets vs. Calgary Flames
Saturday brings us a stacked slate in the NHL with games from 1 p.m. all the way to 10 p.m.
The game of the week has its sights on Calgary where the Flames host the Winnipeg Jets.
Through three weeks of the NHL season, Winnipeg sits as the lone undefeated team in the league.
The Jets come into this game steaming hot with a 7-0-0 record to start the year.
Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck is once again stellar in the blue paint winning all six of his games started, a 1.66 GAA and a .940 save percentage.
Winnipeg was in action on Thursday night and got the 4-3 overtime win against the Seattle Kraken. The Jets went down 1-0 early into the game and sometimes that's a big momentum swing for the opposing team but Winnipeg just kept chipping away.
Nino Niederreiter knotted the game up at one with his third of the season in the second period and then Gabriel Vallardi gave the Jets a 2-1 lead heading into the locker room at the end of two.
Niederreiter then padded the Jets lead by netting another one to give his squad a 3-1 lead in the third.
Seattle stormed back and tied the game up late and forced OT. Nikolaj Ehlers scored the game-winner at 1:26 of overtime and put the Jets past the Kraken 4-3.
The Jets team leader in points is Mark Scheifele but Cole Perfetti has had an amazing start with eight points in seven games.
The team's overall hot start is an effect of their ability to get scoring from up and down the lineup.
They have won games in multiple fashions so far, coming from behind and winning big.
The Calgary Flames enter Saturday night's affair 5-1-1 after a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on home ice.
Coming into the Thursday game, Calgary looked to keep a zero in the regulation loss column but Carolina put an end to that, winning 4-2.
Things didn’t start well for Ryan Huska’s squad as his guys were jumped on right out of the gates as Carolina put three goals home 22 minutes into the game.
Calgary did show some fight as Jake Bean tallied his first of the year to cut the deficit to two and then Jonathan Huberdeau continued his impressive start by netting his fourth of the season to make it 3-2.
In the end, Carolina put in an empty netter to seal the victory over the Flames.
There were lots of questions before the season about the goaltending because of the departure of Jacob Markstrom via trade.
The tandem of Dan Vladar and Dustin Wolf has been pretty solid for the Flames as they have both combined for a 2.71 GAA and a .916 save percentage.
The Flames’ point leader to this point is defenseman Rasmus Andersson with nine points on the year.
These games always seem to be good and especially with it being Hockey Night in Canada, this one will be no different.
Winnipeg looks to extend the unbeaten streak while Calgary wants to get back on track but a tough test lies ahead especially having to solve the Connor Hellebuyck riddle.
Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday night.
