NFL: Is The Chiefs Dynasty Over?
The Kansas City Chiefs bid for the first 3-peat in NFL history was ended swiftly by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59.
The Eagles mauled their way to a 34-0 third quarter lead, with the Chiefs finally getting on the board on a Xavier Worthy touchdown grab with 34 seconds left in the frame.
The Philly defense sacked Mahomes a whopping six times and forced two interceptions, with one being returned for a touchdown by rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean.
The game ended in a 40-22 walloping, leaving questions for the future of the Chiefs and if their dynasty can continue.
In my opinion, I don’t think the Chiefs are falling apart as long as number 15 is under center.
In no way will the front office let the team fail with a future Hall of Fame and potential GOAT quarterback.
The first important news the Chiefs need is the future plans of tight end Travis Kelce. The 35-year-old still has not announced his plans for the 2025 season.
KC will get receiver Rashee Rice back, who was lost for the season in week four after a freak accident with Patrick Mahomes following an interception.
The second-year man from SMU was looking to become a critical piece to the Chiefs offense this season.
Running back Isaiah Pacheco will also benefit from the off-season.
Pacheco battled through many injuries this year, the worst being a broken fibula suffered in week two against the Bengals that kept him out until week 13.
These injuries led to an unproductive season, with his yards per carry dropping almost a full yard from 2023, going from 4.6 to 3.7.
The Chiefs have a couple of important offensive free agents that, if brought back, could help keep the offense atop one of the better units in the NFL.
Wide receivers DeAndre Hopkins, Marquise Brown and Juju Smith-Schuster are all upcoming free agents.
Brown was hurt most of the season and did not make much of an impact this season, while Hopkins was a mid-season trade acquisition.
Smith-Schuster was really the only familiar face for wideouts this season, and while bringing him back would be nice, being able to retain Hopkins or Brown would be huge as both are vertical threats.
The skills positions are not the biggest of worries for Kansas City, however. The biggest problem they face is on the offensive line.
Joe Thuney and Creed Humphrey were both AP First-Team All-Pros this season but the unit was 18th in the NFL in sacks allowed per game, with 2.6.
The draft and free agency will need to be spent on filling holes in what was probably the worst part of the 2025 Chiefs.
On the other side of the ball, the Chiefs had one of the better defenses in the league.
They also have some key free agents to retain there. Linebacker Nick Bolton and safety Justin Reid are both solid pieces to the defense that are on expired deals.
With a free agency that should be focused on retaining talent and a draft centered towards filling problems on the offensive line, the Chiefs will be right back in contention again next season.
