Geno Smith throwing the football

NFL Game of the Week: Seattle Seahawks vs. Detroit Lions

By Carlin Whalen

The undefeated Seattle Seahawks are headed to Michigan to battle the Detroit Lions in a highly anticipated Week 4 NFC showdown.

Each team has seen successful football, not only this season but in recent seasons too. The Seahawks and the Lions want to both continue to build off strong campaigns to continue an upward trend to victory.

Both teams has displayed a strong performance throughout the first three games of the season.

Seattle’s offense has been booming, outscoring their opponents by 30 points which is the fourth-best differential in the league. This performance is put together by eight total touchdowns, three of which came from Geno Smith who is ranked fourth in passing yards (787) this season.

The team has good depth on offense with three receivers and two running backs over 100 yards. This gives the team more options to work with so the Lions can’t just focus on one star player.

A big part of the Seahawks' 3-0 start, however, is the team’s defense.

The Seahawks currently have the second-best-rated defense in the league right behind the Pittsburgh Steelers. They manage to hold opposing offenses to an average of 248.7 yards per game.

Although, the Lions have great offensive efficiency, averaging nearly 400 yards per game.

That yardage is split relatively evenly between passing and rushing, meaning they can move the ball in any situation.

However, Detroit might want to focus more on their backfield as the Seahawks have the No.1 pass defense in the league, only allowing 397 total passing yards throughout the first three weeks.

The Lions have a pretty strong backfield, featuring David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs who have four of the seven team’s touchdowns. They also rank fourth in rushing yards per game sitting right at 163 yards.

While the Lions are ranked 10th in the league on defense, Detroit has the ability to pressure quarterbacks as Aidan Hutchinson leads the way with 6.5 sacks.

This pressure can end up causing critical mistakes which might turn the tides in their favor.

The Seahawks have dominated this matchup versus the Lions, winning 13 of the 18 games played overall. Most recently, Seattle has won six in a row against them.

Will Detroit finally be able to break their losing streak?
