NCAA men's hockey National Championship preview

We’ve arrived in St. Paul, Minnesota, where a spectacle is about to begin. Four teams have run through the gauntlets of the season to make it to the final weekend of play.

Now, only two remain.

It’s title time. It’s time to make history.

The Denver Pioneers and the Boston College Eagles have one more job to do.

If you are a goaltender, you probably won’t like this matchup. Two of the nation’s top-scoring offenses come together in an attempt to send the other packing.

High-octane offensive players will take over the ice, giving fans what they’ve been waiting for since the beginning of the fall.

Denver loves scoring goals as the team leads the nation in the category with 200 goals total this year, 17 more goals than Boston College which is second on the list.

The Pioneers have one of the most dangerous duos in the league. Jack Devine, who has scored 27 times this year with 56 points total is one-half of the pair.

The other half returns after missing time with injury since February. Massimo Rizzo is back, making his return against Boston University.

Rizzo leads the nation in points for a good portion of the season. He enters this game with 44 points in 29 games.

Defenseman Zeev Buium has set the world on fire during his freshman campaign. With 49 points from the blue line, he is one of the most talented at his position.

In a tight game in the semifinals against a usually high-scoring Boston University team, Denver was able to limit the damage to just one goal. The Pioneers kept the Terriers at bay just in time for Tristen Broz to score in overtime for the 2-1 win.

Goaltender Matt Davis made 33 saves en route to the victory.

Denver is back in the title game for the second time in three years.

Their opponent is no stranger to big games. The Boston College Eagles are looking to finish the job for good.

Winners of the Hockey East, the Eagles have an offense that creates nightmares in defenses and goaltenders across the nation.

Led by the freshman phenom Will Smith and Hobey Baker Award finalist Cutter Gauthier, scoring is second nature.

Smith is tied for 12th all-time in points by a freshman in a single season with 71. With a big game on Saturday, he could move into the top 10.

Gauthier hates the hockey puck. Every time he sees that cylindrical piece of vulcanized rubber he smacks it as hard as he can.

He’s netted 38 goals this season, including one in the semifinals against Michigan.

Gabe Perreault and Ryan Leonard have helped lift this team to a new level. They both have 60 points this season.

In the net, a brick wall. Unlike Gauthier, Jacob Fowler loves pucks so much he wants to catch every single one he sees.

He does just that with a .926 save percentage and a 2.14 goals-against average.

Michigan suffered the Boston College attack, losing 4-0.

The Eagles have such a complete team, making it hard to find a weakness.

The stage is set for Saturday, April 13 at 6 p.m. EST.
