NBA Game of the Week: Dallas Mavericks vs. Phoenix Suns
Friday’s NBA slate is loaded with high-profile matchups, but few are more anticipated than the showdown between the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns. This Western Conference rivalry has only intensified over recent seasons.
Their last clash on Oct. 26 ended with a narrow Suns victory, despite a standout 40-point double-double from Dončić. Durant was impressive as well, leading Phoenix with 31 points and nearly hitting 50% from the field.
What truly set the teams apart was free-throw efficiency. Phoenix attempted a staggering 37 free throws compared to Dallas’s 18, and this disparity made it nearly impossible for Dallas to mount a comeback. Capitalizing on their advantage, the Suns maintained a comfortable lead throughout the second half.
Since then, both teams have stayed competitive, with Dallas going 4-2 and the Suns continuing to surge on a six-game win streak. On Wednesday, Phoenix held off the Miami Heat in a 115-112 thriller.
Jusuf Nurkic was a key factor, notching 22 points and 18 rebounds while limiting All-Star Bam Adebayo to just 12 points on 5-of-21 shooting. Nurkic’s performance underscored the importance of Phoenix’s size and defensive presence, factors that could come into play heavily against Dallas’s versatile offense.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks made quick work of the Chicago Bulls in a dominant 119-99 win on Wednesday. The game saw Dallas pulling away in the second quarter, building a lead that they maintained until the final buzzer.
Chicago’s poor shooting night helped the Mavericks’ cause, allowing them to cruise to victory. The win kept Dallas competitive in the Western Conference standings, though health remains a concern with centers Dereck Lively and Maxi Kleber both listed as game-time decisions. The Suns, on the other hand, come into Friday’s game with a fully healthy roster.
For Dallas, the key to winning will be limiting Phoenix’s trips to the free-throw line. In their previous matchup, the Mavericks struggled to contain the Suns without fouling, and this has been a recurring issue in games where Dallas finds itself outpaced at the stripe.
Defensive assignments will also be crucial, especially given the Suns’ formidable backcourt. Klay Thompson will likely take on significant minutes to slow down Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, both of whom are capable of big scoring nights.
Phoenix’s primary objective, however, will be to prevent Dončić from heating up early. With a career average of 30 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists per game against the Suns, Dončić has been a consistent threat.
His past performances against Phoenix are a reminder of how quickly he can alter a game’s momentum. Royce O’Neale is expected to see extended minutes in guarding Dončić, with the Suns aiming to neutralize Dallas’s biggest weapon.
Both teams enter the game after solid Wednesday performances, so the stage is set for another exciting chapter in what has become one of the NBA’s most entertaining rivalries.
