My Fav Five: “New Girl” episodes

By Lucy Bielecki

Throughout all seven seasons, “New Girl” gave fans quite a few good laughs with the show’s witty dialogue and hilarious characters. Here are five of the show’s most memorable and comical episodes.

“See Ya” - Season 1, Episode 24

In this episode, Nick yet again fails to be decisive when he drives his moving van into the desert to avoid having to move in with his current girlfriend, Caroline. He promptly throws the van keys into the abyss, trapping him and the roommates in the desert for a night with only their thoughts and each other.

Being trapped in the desert together causes a lot of tensions to rise, and also a lot of humor to ensue. The roommates also discover that Winston is indeed scared of the dark.

“Cooler” - Season 2, Episode 15

“Cooler” tackles the unspoken tension between Nick and Jess when they are trapped in a room during the apartment's original game of “True American” and forced to kiss. The episode forces Jess and Nick to hesitantly acknowledge their feelings for each other, the moment New Girl fans had been waiting for for two seasons. The episode also features Nick’s iconic favorite coat, which to his devastation he discovers is actually a woman’s jacket.

An iconic New Girl episode, and an important moment in the overall plot line, this episode is a must-watch.

“Quick Hardening Caulk” - Season 2, Episode 19

Not long after “Cooler,” “Quick Hardening Caulk” further pushes Nick and Jess to acknowledge their feelings for each other. In this episode Jess gets put on pain medication for an injury, causing her to admit her feelings for Nick while under the influence of the medicine.

The episode’s second plot is one of the series’ most memorable. Schmidt becomes fixated on attaining a lionfish and will go to any lengths to do so, even if he needs to fish one right out of the ocean. He only admits at the end of the episode that potentially he just wants Cece back, and not to own an actual lionfish.

Background Check” - Season 4, Episode 6

This episode comes out on top as one of New Girl’s all-time funniest, showcasing the witty dialogue that makes the show so memorable.

When Jess admits to having what she believes to be a very large Ziploc bag of meth in her closet, the roommates take it upon themselves to keep the police officer in charge of Winston’s home visit background check from finding this bag of drugs. The episode is made more humorous by Nick’s constant inability to lie when questioned about said drugs.

“Elaine’s Big Day” - Season 2, Episode 25

As the first of Cece’s wedding episodes, “Elaine’s Big Day” follows Schmidt and Winston’s poorly planned attempt to sabotage Cece’s arranged wedding. The episode highlights Winston’s inability to plan a prank correctly when he and Nick find themselves crawling in the air vents with a wild badger instead of sitting in their seats for the wedding.

This closer to season two also features a surprisingly famous guest appearance at the end, the one and only Taylor Swift.
