Military appreciation events hosted to observe Veterans Day

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- Penn State’s Veterans Affairs and Services is hosting events throughout this week to honor veterans and members currently serving in the military.
Military appreciation events and activities honor veterans and those who are currently serving in the military throughout the week until Nov. 11, Veterans Day.
“It’s really all about building a connection between the military and nonmilitary communities and building a better awareness and, kind of, educating each other about each other,” Eugene McFeely, Senior Director of Veterans Affairs and Services, said.
McFeely explained that the “Ask a Veteran” panel held on Tuesday, is a great representation of bridging the community and military members. The panel presents an informative opportunity for curious Penn State students who are both looking to serve and not.
Activities planned for observing the holiday the day before include a military appreciation breakfast, Marine Corps birthday ball and the Veterans Day ceremony.
This year, the annual Veterans Day Ceremony will be held on Friday, Nov. 10 at 11:11 a.m. on the steps of Old Main. It will feature a military family member guest speaker.
In the six years, McFeely has been senior director, Veterans Affairs and Services implemented new ways to appreciate military individuals. For instance, the ceremony has been live-streamed since the pandemic.
Another addition, last year marked the first time there were honorary banners hung on lamp posts downtown. These are prime examples of efforts to celebrate people in the military service.
Some believe there should be more of an emphasis on educating the community about all perspectives, including when exiting service.
“If the events were based on awareness, like you know, ‘How can we help veterans that have been affected by homelessness or drug addiction or PTSD?’ I think that would be a better idea,” said Rachel Oleski, a fourth-year majoring in psychology.
The “Ask a Veteran” panel for students and a military cultural competency training program for Penn State employees provided educational opportunities throughout the week, while the annual ceremony honors veterans to the community.
