Remembering Michael Gambon
Sir Michael Gambon, the actor who brought to life some of entertainment’s most beloved characters such as Harry Potter’s Dumbledore, passed away Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023, after being hospitalized with pneumonia. Gambon was 82 years old.
Born Michael John Gambon on Oct. 19, 1940, the actor grew up in London, where he found his passion for acting.
He joined a local theater group and eventually became a founding member of the National Theatre at London’s Old Vic alongside Harry Potter alum, Maggie Smith. His talents allowed him to play many roles on stage, particularly in Shakespearean plays.
Gambon’s gift became even more recognized when he ventured into the TV and film industry. His breakout role was Philip Marlow in “The Singing Detective” and most recently, he played Moses in “Cordelia”.
Gambon continued to pursue theater, but in 2015 announced he could no longer act on stage due to problems with his memory. However, he still thrived in acting on screen.
During his career of over 60 years, Gambon has received many honors and awards including being knighted in 1988, BAFTA Awards, international awards and many more.
Gambon leaves behind his wife, Anne Miller, and sons, Fergus, Tom and William. He will be missed.
