Men's Lacrosse Game of the Week: No. 6 Maryland vs No. 2 Ohio State
The No. 6 Maryland Terrapins will host the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday at 2 p.m. for one of the most anticipated Big Ten matchups of the college lacrosse season.
Ohio State lost its first game of the season to Utah, but hasn't lost since, winning 11 straight games. Maryland is coming off an unexpected loss to Rutgers for their second loss of the season.
Maryland has been so dominant when it comes to these two teams facing off against each other.
They currently lead the all-time series in this matchup with a record of 14-3 and have a six-game winning streak against the Buckeyes.
When these two teams faced off last season, Maryland beat Ohio State at home in College Park by a score of 8-7.
Maryland will be on the road for this game, but they are led by one of the best goalies in the country in Logan McNaney.
Maryland’s sixth-year goalkeeper has the chance to break the all-time record for saves by a Maryland Terrapin. He had the chance to break it in the game against Rutgers, but failed to make a save in the fourth quarter. The first save that he makes against the Buckeyes will put them at the top of the list.
Maryland is also one of the top defensive teams in the country, with a clearing percentage of 90.0, which is the fourth best in the nation.
They also have one of the best scoring defenses in the country, only allowing 7.60 goals per game, the second best in Division I.
However, they are gonna have to go up against one of the top offensive players in the nation: Alex Marinier
Marinier is one of the best goal scorers in the country. He has 40 goals on the season, which is tied with one of the greatest goal scorers of all time, CJ Kirst.
There’s only been one game this season where he hasn’t scored, and he’s averaged 3.5 goals per game since that game.
Not only are the Buckeyes good offensively, but they have one of the best goaltenders in the nation in Caleb Fyock.
Fyock has what are the best safe percentages in the country at 62.2%, which ranked third in the country, just a spot above Maryland’s McNaney.
He also has the second-best goals-against average in D1 with 7.13, which is one spot higher than McNaney, who averages 7.47 goals against.
Both of these teams’ offenses and defenses in this stacked matchup will be put to the test, and it will be one of the greatest games of the season.
However, this game is really gonna come down to the goalkeepers. Fyock and McNaney are two of the best goalies in the nation, and their skills will be put to the test in this highly anticipated Big Ten matchup.
