Syracuse celebrating

Kyle McCord, and the re-emergence of the 'Cuse

By Giustino Racchini

If the name Kyle McCord sounds familiar to the people viewing this article, spoiler alert, it does.

But you may not want to tell Ryan Day about it.

Syracuse has been lighting it up, two weeks into the season, and the main reason why is because of the rebirth of a college quarterback that was kicked to the curb by Ohio State last spring.

The history of Syracuse football has not been what one would call exciting, however, they have developed a couple of talented NFL star players.

Guys such as Donovan McNabb, who was the best quarterback in ‘Cuse history, and Jim Brown, who went on to have one of the greatest NFL careers of all time, played at Syracuse and have only one national title to show for their success.

The last time the school had a 10-win season, came under Dino Babers in 2018. Eric Dungey was the quarterback for that team, which is obviously not a particularly strong quarterback as he only threw 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions passing on the season.

He had 15 rushing touchdowns as well, but there were not a whole lot of people talking about Dungey being a star quarterback.

With McCord, the vibe may be changing in Syracuse, New York.

Through two weeks of the 2024 college football season, McCord has overperformed what many people expected him to do, at least right away.

In two home games for Syracuse, he has eight passing touchdowns with only one interception as well. What may be even more impressive is the fact that he has amassed just over 700 receiving yards while completing his passes at a 69.4 completion percentage.

The schedule for Syracuse is also favorable down the stretch, considering the fact they only have two more ranked matchups in their schedule as of week two, for the duration of their season.

The ACC has never been a particularly strong conference, considering the fact that the committee last season left Florida State out of the Top four teams with an undefeated record.

Now, thankfully, the winner of the ACC is guaranteed a berth into the college football playoff, and with the Seminoles starting off 0-2 this season, Syracuse and Miami right now seem to be on a collision course for the championship, considering their quarterbacks.

Cam Ward has been lighting it up down in South Beach, and with McCord’s fast start, Syracuse fans should be excited about a team that is going to compete fast offensively against the best of the best.

The ACC has seen a fast start from other powerful programs as well.

Boston College already has a big-time win against Florida State, which helps their chances to make noise throughout the ACC. Bill O’Brien being their head coach should help as well, considering his success at both the NFL level and his small stint at Penn State.

With the bleak years of Clemson football seemingly at the forefront, a new ACC Champion will seemingly be crowned once again.

Syracuse hopes that their team is the last one standing, and how poetic it would be for the legend that continues to grow, in Kyle McCord.
