Iran launches missile attack on Israel
JERUSALEM – On Tuesday, Iran launched at least 180 missiles into Israeli territory, the most recent attacks since the war began. The attacks seem only to be escalating.
The missile strikes from Iran were in retaliation for a series of devastating blows that Israel launched in recent weeks against the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah who reside in Lebanon.
Fire pounded southern Lebanese villages on Tuesday when Israel launched artillery and airstrikes. Hezbollah responded with a barrage of rockets into Israel, 180 missiles. The missiles fired into Israel streaked across the night sky, their orange glow accompanied by air raid sirens that encouraged residents to seek cover.
Israeli military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari announced that the country’s air defenses intercepted many of the incoming Iranian missiles, although some did land in central and southern Israel.
The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, vowed late on Tuesday night that they would retaliate against Iran. He noted that he believed they made a big mistake by launching the missiles and threatened that they would pay for the action they took.
Fears of a wider war in the Middle East linger due to Hezbollah and Hamas being close allies backed by Iran. Each violent escalation contributes to the potential of a larger wat and that could draw in Iran and the United States. United States troops remain in the Middle East in support of Israel.
Iran and Israel have fought in a smaller dispute for years, but recently attacks have escalated. There is no end in sight.
