Hobey Baker Watch: Week of Nov. 15

By Anthony Desher

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and many programs are thankful for the star players that don the jersey. These Hobey Baker candidates are serving up more than mashed potatoes and turkey, but highlight reel performances every week that catch the eyes of fans everywhere.

Macklin Celebrini, Forward, Boston University

The youngest player in college hockey is at it again. The projected first-overall pick continues to strengthen his argument for the ranking. Whenever his skates touch the ice, get ready for some can’t-miss action.

A four-assist game against UMass Lowell shoots his point total up to 18 on the season. His offensive upside makes him such a dangerous player and numerous goaltenders around the NCAA have been burned by his skill.

Jack Devine, Forward, Denver

This player’s scoring has truly been divine. Leading the entire NCAA in goals with 10, Devine has been one terrifying Pioneer. The duo of him and Massimo Rizzo has taken Denver to new heights.

His two-way play adds to his toolbox of versatility and his strengths put him in the Hobey Baker conversation for a reason.

Will Smith, Forward, Boston College

The Fresh Prince of Chestnut Hill has been nothing less than advertised. His recipe calls for silky mitts, a great shot and a high IQ. For a freshman in a competitive Hockey East conference, Smith has had no problem adjusting to the next level.

With five goals and nine assists for 14 points, he’s one of the highest-scoring players in the entire NCAA. The San Jose Sharks are deep into a rebuild and with Will Smith in the system, his services can help the Sharks get a lot better soon.

Bradly Nadeau, Forward, Maine

The Maine Black Bears have had a very strong start to their 2023-24 campaign. In Hockey East, you need to be good to survive and Bradly Nadeau has stood out with the other elites.

The Carolina Hurricanes have struck gold once again with their draft picks as the freshman has six goals in eight games. Picking up a pair of points against former No. 1 team Boston College has put Nadeau on the Hobey Baker list for the first time.

Gabe Perreault, Forward, Boston College

Going back to Chestnut Hill we’ll find Boston College’s point leader. Gabe Perreault was historically good with the U.S.A. program before college. Now he leads an elite group of Eagles in points so far.

He hasn’t found the back of the net much, but his ability to dish the biscuit has helped his team become one of the best. 13 assists in 15 games makes him one of the best set-up men in the NCAA.
