James Hagens

Hobey Baker Watch: Oct. 31

By Andrew Matz

The college hockey season is in full swing, and we have seen many players who have massive impacts on their teams. With that said let's take a look at some of the top players for this year's Hobey Baker Award.

These players are in no particular order.

James Hagens, (F), Boston College, Freshman

Hagens has been off to a hot start in his freshman campaign with the Eagles. So far this season Hagens has six points (1 G,5 A) in four games played. Along with his points, he is a plus-six on the season so far.

The projected No. 1 overall pick has filled a massive void left by Will Smith going to the NHL. Hagens has high expectations for this season and so far he has been exceeding them.

Gabe Perreault, (F), Boston College, Sophomore

Another Eagle makes the list.

The New York Rangers drafted Gabe Perreault with the No. 23 pick in the 2023 NHL draft. He showed he was a steal in the draft having 60 points (19 G, 41 A) in 36 games last season for BC.

This year Perreault has picked up right where he left off. Perreault finds himself leading the Eagles in points with seven (2 G, 5A) in four games.

Trey Augustine, (G), Michigan State, Sophomore

Last year Trey Augustine was one of the best goalies in college hockey. He posted a .915 save percentage and won Michigan State 23 games in his 35 games played.

This year the Red Wings' prospect looks just as good. In five starts, Augustine has posted a .939 save percentage and won four for the Spartans.

Championship teams need a great goalie to win and Augustine has been that for Michigan State.

Zeev Buium, (D), Denver, Sophomore

After winning the National Championship last year Denver finds itself on a tear once again.

They are No.1 in the rankings and are undefeated to start the season. This is thanks to multiple players but one is defenseman Zeev Buium. Last year Buium had 50 points (11 G, 39 A) in 42 games.

He continues to show why the Minnesota Wild drafted him with the No. 12 pick in 2024. This season, he has seven points (0 G, 7 A).

Connor Kurth, (F), Minnesota, Junior

Kurth has been a solid player for the Gophers over his two years with the team. This year he has taken a step to being a star.

The junior has 12 points (6 G, 6 A) in six games. He is already more than halfway to his point total from last year.

Minnesota needs Kurth to continue his play in a weakened Big Ten division this year.

It is still early in the season and many players could have a shot at the award.

Notre Dame forward Cole Knuble could be someone who makes the next list. He has 10 points (5 G, 5 A) this season.

Some other players who could make a jump into the race are Jack Devine, Ryan Leonard, Arsenii Sergeev, Cole Eiserman and Jimmy Snuggerud.
