Jeanty on the field

Heisman Watch: Week 4

By Andrew Deal

No. 1: Cam Ward, QB, Miami

Ward has remained consistent for the Hurricanes and his consistency is why he remains the top Heisman candidate at the moment.

Before conference play, Ward and his team dominated South Florida 50-15. He threw for 404 yards and three touchdowns while adding 43 yards on the ground.

Miami looks like the front-runner for the ACC and with Ward’s play he could lead the Hurricanes to a College Football Playoff berth while also taking home the Heisman Trophy.

No. 2: Travis Hunter, CB/WR, Colorado

Hunter continues to shine on both sides of the ball entering Big 12 play.

In Colorado’s most recent game against Baylor, he caught seven passes for 130 yards.

However, it was his play on the defensive side of the ball that stood out and caused him to move up the rankings. In overtime, he forced a fumble on the goal line to seal a victory for Colorado.

If he remains as dominant as he has been on both sides of the ball, it will be very hard to not give him the Heisman Trophy.

No. 3: Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise State

Despite playing for a non-power 4 school, Ashton Jeanty has solidified himself as one of the best players in college football.

In Week 4, Jeanty had arguably his worst game, statistically speaking. He carried the ball 11 times for 127 yards.

Now that might sound like a really good game, but by Jeanty’s standards, it’s nothing close to what he has done.

He already has nine touchdowns on the ground and has carried for just under 600 yards in only three games.

No. 4: Jalen Milroe, QB, Alabama

Milroe holds strong in the middle of the rankings after a bye week for the Crimson Tide.

The biggest test for Milroe and Alabama comes in Week 5 against Georgia. A top-5 matchup, against one of the best defenses in college football, can make or break Milroe’s Heisman campaign.

He has solidified himself as a true dual-threat quarterback, with 590 yards in the air and 156 yards on the ground.

No. 5: Jaxson Dart, QB, Ole Miss

Statistically speaking, Jaxson Dart is one of the top quarterbacks in the nation with 1,554 yards in the air.

He has the Rebels in a position that they have never been in with a very good chance to make the College Football Playoff.

With conference play getting started, Dart’s success on the field will directly result in success for the Ole Miss offense.

Honorable Mention: Nico Iamaleava, QB, Tennessee

Iamaleava has continued to shine in his first season as a starter at Tennessee.

In a pretty dominant win over then-No. 15 Oklahoma, Iamaleava did what he needed to lead his team to victory.

He went 13/21 for 194 yards and a touchdown while commanding the ball and keeping it away from an Oklahoma offense that could not find any momentum.

As the schedule continues for the Volunteers, Iamaleava’s success will be key for continued success for the team. He will see his Heisman stock continue to rise if his play remains strong.
