Heisman Watch: Week 3

By Andrew Deal

After the third week of college football, the Heisman Watch and rankings have completely shifted after an injury and some big-time performances.

Honorable Mentions: Quinn Ewers and Nico Iamaleava

Ewers sat atop the rankings a week ago. However, an injury for the star quarterback from Texas drops him from the rankings as he is out at least Week 4 with an injury.

If Ewers was healthy, he would remain towards the top of the rankings with his team now sitting at No. 1 in the country.

For Iamaleava, he didn’t fully have a chance to move up at all given his strength of opponent. The Volunteers dominated Kent State 71-0 and he didn’t even play a full half with his team up by so much.

With SEC play in the near future, the young Tennessee quarterback can move up if he continues to play at the level he’s at right now.

5. Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado

Hunter continues to prove why he is the most talented player in the country with his stellar play on both sides of the ball.

In a rivalry game against Colorado State, Hunter caught 13 passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns. He added to his impressive day on offense with an interception on defense while essentially shutting down the Rams’ top receiver.

Despite him possibly being the best player in the country, his chances of winning the Heisman are lower because of the lower expectations for his team.

4. Jaxson Dart, QB, Ole Miss

Dart continues to put up massive numbers and his stock continues to rise. With high expectations for the Rebels, Dart has shown what he can do to put his team in a perfect position for a playoff spot.

In his week 3 performance against Wake Forest, Dart completed 26 of his 34 passes for 377 yards and two touchdowns. He added another touchdown on the ground, as well.

Dart has thrown for over 350 yards in every game so far this season.

3. Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise State

Jeanty has put on a show through two games this season and has proven he is one of, if not, the best running backs in the country.

He is a major reason that Boise State is in contention for the non-power four College Football Playoff Bid.

The Broncos had a bye week in week 3, but Jeanty has run for 459 yards and an insane nine touchdowns, including three against Oregon.

2. Jalen Milroe, QB, Alabama

Milroe is one of the flashiest and most well-rounded players in the country. His ability to run the ball is a massive threat to defenses and he continues to mix it well with his passing ability.

In the Crimson Tide’s dominating win against Wisconsin, Milroe led the way in the air and on the ground with 117 passing yards and 75 on the ground while accounting for five total touchdowns.

Milroe’s consistency is the biggest question mark in his game and if he remains consistent he will be a huge threat for the Heisman Trophy.

1. Cam Ward, QB, Miami

Ward has the Hurricanes back in a spot they haven’t been familiar with in years. Miami is ranked No. 8 in the country and is a major national threat.

Ward showed out in the massive victory over Ball State. Despite the lower competition, Ward’s numbers were still impressive. He threw for 346 yards and five touchdowns.

Ward has continued to climb to bigger stages. He started at Incarnate Word before transferring to Washington State. In his first year at Miami, for a team that always has massive expectations, he is living up to the hype he received in the offseason.

The Hurricanes have struggled for years and have always seemed to miss that star quarterback. With Ward, the sky is the limit and he continues to prove he is at the top of the Heisman rankings.
