Google removes important cultural holidays from its calendar

By Natalee Bravo

Google Calendar users will now have to manually add Pride Month, Black History Month and countless other identity-based holidays to their calendars after these observances were removed from the platform.

The Verge first reported these removals on Friday, but Google states it has made changes to its holidays starting back in 2024.

The holidays officially removed from Google Calendar include: Black History Month, Pride Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Women’s History Month, Indigenous People’s Month, Jewish Heritage, and Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The online search platform has stated that these holidays were not “sustainable” to their calendar model and has decided to now only recognize public holidays from timeanddate.com.

The Calendar team had been adding these events manually to their platform and constantly received feedback that certain holidays were missing. Maintaining these holidays wasn’t “scalable” for the company which is why they have resorted to sticking with third-party help.

The removal of these events follows President Trump’s recent aim at DEI policies. Companies including Google, META, and Amazon have announced a reassessment of their DEI efforts.

The web giant has also made updates to its maps, renaming the Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America.”

Google has emphasized that the company still continues to celebrate a variety of cultural events throughout the year.
