"Everybody's Live with John Mulaney" Season 1 Episode 4

For the fourth episode of “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney,” celebrities gathered to talk about squatters, who are people who unlawfully occupy uninhabited buildings without permission. The hour-long show featured Wanda Sykes, John Waters, Stavros Halkias and infamous lawyer Neal Katyal.

Mulaney opened by telling a behind-the-scenes story about the hip-hop group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, who were supposed to be the musical guest for the episode. After contacting their manager and setting up arrangements, the band asked for $2,800 in cash, saying it was for transportation, and later escalated the demand to $100,000.

This is when Mulaney realized that this was not the manager of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and instead someone trying to scam him.

Next, Mulaney brought Sykes and Waters to the stage, curious for their opinions on squatting. When asked his opinion, Waters joked, “But squatting, I wish I was one. I’m jealous.”

He noted that he even dated a squatter once, but the gentleman could not stay the night in any legal space because he was an anarchist. On the other hand, Sykes has never squatted, even though her parents may call it that.

Following that, they took the first call of the night from Tyler in Los Angeles, who works as a real estate agent and had a mansion in the Hollywood Hills get squatted on by OnlyFans models. There was not terrible damage, however dog poop and pee were left everywhere.

Halkias and Katyal were then introduced and welcomed to the conversation.

Katyal holds the title of former acting Solicitor General of the United States, which means he argues cases in the Supreme Court. Recently, he broke Thurgood Marshall’s record for the number of cases argued by an attorney of color.

When asked about the topic, he notes that squatting is an interesting concept because it is difficult to achieve.

“The idea that you could not own a piece of land and just occupy it, and if you occupy it long enough, it becomes yours,” Katyal said.

Halkias proves he is pro-squatter by cursing landlords, and says he would only care if he ever got a single security deposit back. Kind jumps in and adds that he has never squatted, but lets people stay at his house all the time, and they occasionally stay there for long periods of time.

The show transitioned to taking some more phone calls, with one person having weird energy, causing Mulaney to immediately hang up.

Some of the best bits of the night go to Aidy Bryant’s quick cameo and impression of country star Jelly Roll. Her portrayal delighted the audience, adding an unexpected and entertaining twist to the show.

To finish off an amazing episode, Hope and the New Century Chamber Orchestra performed “Spring 1” from Max Richter’s “Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi - The Four Seasons.” The performance was highly impressive and unique for a talk show, offering a refreshing and sophisticated touch.

With an engaging lineup of guests and hilariously memorable segments, this episode proved to be another entertaining and unpredictable hour of television.
