Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney - “Are Dinosaurs Put Together Correctly?” review
On this week’s episode of Everybody’s Live, John Mulaney brings in Conan O’Brien, Ayo Edebiri, and Tina Fey.
Mulaney announces during his monologue that this week’s episode is the show’s Christmas episode, despite the episode airing nowhere near Christmas time.
Mulaney then explains how he was reading a book about dinosaurs to his three-year-old when he started to wonder if dinosaurs were really real. He then continues to say that while he believes in dinosaurs, he is confident that they are not put together correctly.
Mulaney then welcomes in someone dressed as Santa and brings him out a plate of cookies. Then he brings out his first guest, Conan O’Brien. The two discuss O’Brien’s talk show and Mulaney explains how he raced home from a friend's house to watch the show when he was eleven. They then talk about their different family Christmas traditions.
The two then decide that they know more about putting together dinosaurs than any scientist would. They then take their first caller, Dr. Jack Horner, a paleontologist.
Horner says that he puts together dinosaurs, and says they might occasionally put them together incorrectly. Horner compares dinosaurs closely to birds, saying they were colorful and probably sang.
The show then cuts to a segment in which Mulaney brings together a group of Terminator 2 stunt doubles for a focus group. The stunt doubles discuss their specific specialities within being a stunt double.
Mulaney then brings out his next guest, Ayo Edebiri. She reads a letter in which she wrote a Letterboxd review of Mulaney’s show.
The three then take their next caller, Wilder, a seven-year-old. Wilder has called in to explain how he got in trouble at school for saying Santa wasn’t real.
Their next caller is Chuck, an author who made a career by writing about dinosaurs.
The Santa character from earlier then comes back onto the set attempting to sell puppies and Everybody’s Live gift bags.
Mulaney then brings out his third guest of the night, Tina Fey. The four take another caller, Cooper from Kentucky. Cooper sells dinosaur fossils for a living, and recently sold a bird fossil for 15,000 dollars.
Their next caller is Don, who has a dinosaur named after him. Don explains how half of all dinosaurs have been named incorrectly.
Mulaney then brings in a screen with a talking dinosaur, he says he got from a museum. The dinosaur talks as if it were a person and says a lot of comedic nonsense.
The three guests then open gifts that Mulaney got for them, in the spirit of the Christmas episode theme.
Overall, the topic of dinosaurs was executed well in this episode, with especially interesting and comedic callers.
