Delta plane overturns, crash lands in Toronto
In the latest of a series of deadly plane crashes in North America this year, A Delta Airlines flight traveling from Minneapolis to Toronto crashed around 2:15 p.m. ET Monday.
All 80 passengers survived, but 21 of those passengers were in the hospital with injuries. Most of the injured have been released.
Video released of the plane crash at the Toronto Pearson International Airport shows the plane landing as the right wing hits the runway and dismantles into a gulf of fire. With the left wing still intact, the plane skids and overturns.
The video shows Flight 4819 failing to “flare.” This helps the pilot pull the nose of the plane up to allow more air resistance when landing.
The runway was reported to be dry according to Toronto Airport Fire Chief Todd Aitken. It is expected to be closed until Thursday evening.
The winds in the Toronto region were reported to be 26 mph with gusts up to 38 mph. The wind was reportedly blowing snow into the air causing the visibility to be around five miles.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow stated in a post on social media, “I’m relieved to learn that all passengers and crew are accounted for after today’s plane crash at Toronto Pearson. Thank you to all the first responders, crew and airport staff for their quick actions and commitment to keeping everyone safe.”
The cause of the crash is still under investigation and will be led by The Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
