CommRadio Weekly Playlist: Sept. 23
Here, members of the Arts and Entertainment Department will talk about the songs that dominated their playlists during the week and what makes them so good.
“Writing’s On The Wall” - ROLE MODEL
“Writing’s On The Wall” is the opening track of ROLE MODEL’s sophomore album “Kansas Anymore.” The pop-rock album is an exploration of the chaos you feel after a heartbreak.
ROLE MODEL, the stage name of Tucker Harrington, is an American singer-songwriter from Maine.
The song serves as a great opening track and articulates the sorrow of losing someone important to you in an upbeat way. Harrington writes about listening to a lecture from his dad about an ex-girlfriend, a universal experience for those going through breakups.
He then sings about. This begging a stranger for answers shows the desperation in trying to get over someone.
The song’s upbeat tone juxtaposed with its sad lyrics make for a perfect opening track on an album that goes through the different stages of grief one faces after a relationship ends. - Isabelle Charboneau
“Sailor Song” - Gigi Perez
“Sailor Song” has gone super viral on TikTok recently and has managed its way on my ‘For You’ page, so obviously I have been listening to it nonstop now.
Gigi Perez is a 23-year-old singer-songwriter who has been compared to the likes of Phoebe Bridges, Gracie Abrams and Hozier.
This track in particular has really connected with all types of people and has been the main reason for her rapid rise to success.
The song introduces this idea of sailors continuing to sail through storms taking on all the high and lows of the sea, and how Perez wishes someone would love her like that.
The lyric “Won't you kiss me on the mouth and love me like a sailor?” really drives this concept home and is just an incredible example of her brilliant songwriting.
Perez has a unique voice that can take you by surprise on first listen, but after multiple listens you start to find and resonate with all the power she exudes through her vocals.
I love when a song can have simple production yet be able to take you on such an emotional journey, and this track really nails this.
I'm beyond glad that more sapphic artists are making huge strides in music and can’t wait to listen to more Gigi Perez. - Madison Rush
“Sunday” - The Cranberries
A band that sounds like the fall season: The Cranberries, and especially their 1993 album, “Everybody Else is Doing it, So Why Can’t We?" While this album carries several songs that really accentuate the fall season, such as “Linger” and “Dreams,” I chose “Sunday” because of its mystical and captivating aura.
Dolores O’Riordan, who unfortunately passed away in January of 2018, performs the vocals and sings of the monotony that comes with being stuck in the same position, in relationships as well as life.
The lyricism of this song creates a relatable sensation in which we can feel the emotions running through the narrator; the feeling of losing control in the mundane situation that is a failing relationship.
This song is one that’s great to put on while walking down the street on a chill fall morning, perhaps at the turn of hoodie weather, much like I did on my commute to campus today.
If you’re looking for a good tune to play this fall season, this one by The Cranberries very well might be what you’re looking for. - Sketch Morton
