Here, members of the Arts and Entertainment Department will talk about the songs that dominated their playlists during the week and what makes them so good.

Cover for the J. Geils Band

"Where Did Our Love Go - Live" - The J. Geils Band

Covering someone else’s music is very hit or miss in my eyes. To successfully adapt another artist’s work, you must keep the integral qualities that made the original work while adding a twist of your own sound.

The J. Geils Band’s rendition of “Where Did Our Love Go” checks off those boxes.

Originally performed by The Supremes, this song seamlessly flows between the classic Motown sound and the bluesy, rock-and-roll sound so familiar with The J. Geils Band.

The slide guitar and harmonica blend so well with the drums and harmonies, making this a fun tune to hear, particularly live.

Listening to this song immediately reminds me of “Grown Ups 2,” where The J. Geils Band performed during one of my favorite scenes in a comedy movie.

The musical choices are fantastic in this cover, but the nostalgia always brings me back to “Where Did Our Love Go.” – Matt Zwiercan

Cover of Hozier's "Unknown/Nth"

“Unknown / Nth” - Hozier

Hozier has such a way with words and every song he releases makes me crumble, and “Unknown / Nth” is no exception. Hozier expresses all of the complexities that relationships and heartbreak can have in this song.

He goes through the pain of someone you trust betraying you over and over again, and neither person learns from that pain. The title of the track “Unknown / Nth” allows you to assume the ‘Nth’ is showing the number of times this person has caused him pain.

Hozier vocal skills are no secret but this song highlights it beautifully. You can feel the pain and emotion in every lyric he sings and it physically awakes something in me when I listen.

The song is accompanied by just Hozier's voice and a very dynamic guitar melody and that is it. This gives the track a very intimate feel and lets you absorb everything he is saying.

The bridge is my absolute favorite part of the song as you finally get to that climax and more production comes into play to make you levitate when you hear it for the first time.

Hozier is an expert at creating the most emotionally moving music that will continue to ruin me in the best way possible. – Madison Rush
