CommRadio Weekly Playlist: Aug. 28

Here, members of the Arts and Entertainment Department will talk about the songs that dominated their playlists during the week and what makes them so good.

“You Know Me Too Well” - Nothing But ThievesIf anyone asks me to describe “You Know Me Too Well,” I will quickly say it is the emotions of desire and passion in the form of an alternative rock song.

Originally when I found this song I was not paying attention to the lyrics. Instead, my instinctive head-banging and natural fondness for the vocalist meant that I had encountered an official bop and that it belonged on my liked playlist.

Conor Mason, the main singer, sings in an unbelievably beautiful alto range with a smooth, sultry tone that suits the alternative feel. From the start, he gives listeners a taste of his wispy yet slick upper-range vocals.

After falling in love with the vocals, I fully realized the lyrical topic, and the song’s repeatability suddenly increased tenfold. The lyrics are communicated from the perspective of a person with a lyrically described “filthy impetuous soul” and a venereal hankering for their romantic partner.

The use of “impetuous” added a fierce sense of grit and desperation to the song. Maintaining accurate sentiments without turning vulgar is an aspect of this song that I appreciate, and I would say is one of its more unique features. – Erell Williams

“bad” - wave to earth

Korean alt rock band “wave to earth” released their first full length album in April and it quickly became my top 5 of the year. The lead single “bad” stands out as an immediate favorite and makes me truly feel giddy inside.

The chorus has lyrics that are simple but beyond effective in expressing such sweet and vulnerable love. Lead singer and writer of this track, Daniel Kim, sings, “How could my day be bad, when I’m with you? You're the only one who makes me laugh.”

This song emits this relatable feeling of love that makes you kick in your feet in the air like a schoolgirl with a crush.

The overall groove in this song allows you to just mindlessly listen and absorb the emotions of the lyrics.

“wave to earth” knows how to make you feel beautiful and that you deserve affectionate love, and everyone should be able to feel like that. – Madison Rush

“When the Stars Go Blue” Tyler Hilton and Bethany Joy Lenz

Am I feeling down in the dumps about going back to class? Complicated answer, but the perfect way to combat mixed feelings about the semester starting is blasting a “One Tree Hill” anthem.

“When the Stars Go Blue” by Tyler Hilton and Bethany Joy Lenz brings me back to peaceful summer months when my only worry was watching the first five seasons of “One Tree Hill”.

“One Tree Hill” was definitely my show of the summer, meaning that “When the Stars Go Blue” and “I Don’t Want to Be” by Gavin DeGraw really encapsulate the season.

Honestly, “When the Stars Go Blue” is an underrated banger. While it is slow it still slaps, and represents an unofficial couple that I ship.

Is this song relatable to my life at all right now? Well, not really, but let me live out my dreams of being married to Nathan Scott without judgment. – Savannah Swartz

“drive ME crazy!” - Lil Yachty

I hadn’t given Lil Yachty’s album “Let’s Start Here.” a full listen until recently, and “drive ME crazy!” is one song from the release that I have constantly had on repeat.

Despite being released on Jan. 27, 2023, “Let’s Start Here.” has quite a few songs that radiate summertime vibes, and “drive ME crazy!” is no exception.

“drive ME crazy!” has upbeat lyrics that makes it the perfect song to listen to when you need a little pick-me-up, and I love listening to it while driving around or when getting ready for a fun night.

My favorite part of “drive ME crazy!” is the chorus, but Lil Yachty’s line “Good love feels like butterflies suffocatin’ your insides” scratches my brain just right every time.

I love many of the other tracks from “Let’s Start Here.,” but “drive ME crazy!” is definitely my current obsession. – Sarah Gavlak
