Columbus Blue Jackets’ Johnny Gaudreau, brother Matthew killed in unimaginable tragedy
NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were tragically killed in an accident Thursday night in Salem County, New Jersey. The tragedy came on the eve of their sister's wedding.
Reports say Johnny and Matthew were riding bicycles on County Route 551 on Thursday night when they were struck by a 43-year-old Sean Higgens. Higgens was charged with two counts of death by auto.
“Higgins was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol,” the press release from State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron said.
Johnny Gaudreau or “Johnny Hockey” was drafted by the Calgary Flames and made a name for himself as soon as he entered the league.
Johnny was a star player that could change an entire franchise by the way he played and his attitude.
After playing with the Flames for eight seasons, Johnny signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Matthew was a professional hockey player in the ECHL. He played for the Worcester Railers during the 2021-22 season as well as the Reading Royals.
“Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy.” A recent statement by the Blue Jackets said. “Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but more significantly a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend.”
People should go home today and tell their family that they love them. Life is unpredictable and sometimes the unimaginable happens.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Gaudreau family and everyone affected by this tragedy. Johnny and Matthew may be gone, but they will never be forgotten.
